Text Box: Second Sight Medical Products, Inc., the Sylmar, CA manufacturer of retinal prostheses, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved an Investigational Device Exemption to conduct a clinical study of the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System at centers of excellence across the U.S. The Argus II is the second generation of an electronic retinal implant designed for the treatment of blindness due to retinitis pigmentosa, a group of inherited eye diseases that affect the retina.
Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, Inc., the Foxborough, MA manufacturer of brain computer interfaces, announced that a notification of allowance has been received from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “Method of Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury.” The patent relates to the company’s Andara Oscillating Field Stimulator neural stimulation technology platform. The company also filed an application for a Humanitarian Device Exemption on the OFS device which is intended for the treatment of  acute spinal cord injuries. The device is currently in clinical trials.
Boston Scientific Corp., the Natick, MA manufacturer of neurostimulation devices, announced the launch of its Neuromodulation Group’s Race Against Pain public outreach campaign to 50 million chronic pain sufferers in the U.S. Inspired by Mike Roman, Formula race car driver, chronic pain patient, and campaign spokesperson, the campaign’s mission is to educate sufferers about the Text Box: importance of pain specialists and provide them with peer-to-peer support. 
Northstar Neuroscience, Inc., the Seattle, WA manufacturer of cortical stimulation devices, announced promising initial data from an eight-patient investigational device feasibility study (SAHALE) of cortical stimulation to treat tinnitus. The study found that investigational cortical stimulation of the auditory cortex for the suppression of tinnitus is feasible and appears to be safe. 
The 2007 Neurotech Leaders Forum, to be held October 25-26 in Newport Beach, CA, will feature an interactive program with disability leaders representing several segments of the neurological diseases and disorders communities. The Thursday afternoon program will feature a neurotechnology overview session for potential users of neurotech devices, followed by a panel discussion combining users and neurotechnology industry representatives. Neurotech Network participated in the Paralysis Task Force in Washington DC hosted by the Center for Disease Control and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.  The second time meeting, this task force discussed the future direction of health promotion, statistical monitoring and clinical guidelines for those with paralysis.
